2013–2014 Season

There's been so much talk around town about celebrities lately and when Anchorage said they would announce today, well, we thought it was time to let the news out about our own. So here it is — a preview of what's to come next year:

Hot Club of Cowtown

September 13, 2013

The hardest-swinging trio on the planet The Hot Club of Cowtown comes to town on a wave of enthusiasm following their appearance here last summer with Mountain Stage. Their international cult following stems from for their sonic personification of joy and unique sound inspired by their namesakes: hot jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli’s Hot Club of France, and the western swing influence of Bob Willis and His Texas Playboys.

You asked, we listened! Hot Club of Cowtown was a direct response to audience interest. Their brief appearance during last summer's Mountain Stage, left everyone wanting a full length performance. So that's how we'll begin. In fact, we are the lead presenter in a big statewide tour.

Martin Short

October 5, 2013

Martin Short, celebrated comedian and actor, has won fans and accolades in television, film and theater since his breakout season on Saturday Night Live. He received his first Emmy in 1982 for SCTV. The star of many feature films including Three Amigos, Inner Space, Three Fugitives, and Father of the Bride and an accomplished stage actor, Short has won both Tony and an Outer Critics Circle Awards. The New York Times describes Short as “a natural for live musicals, a limber singer and dancer who exudes a fiery energy that makes you want to reach for your sunglasses.” In 1994, Short was awarded the Order of Canada, the Canadian equivalent to British Knighthood. He was also inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame in June 2000.

Martin’s show is a variety show, with a lot of audience participation. He interviews a guest as Jiminy Glick, performs skits as characters such as Ed Grimley, sings humorous songs, and plays funny clips. Overall a fun, family friendly show.
YES! For real, Fairbanks!...

Anne's puzzle

“Robert, Robert, Robert! I got it, I got them both!”

This is often how I would enter KUAC on Wednesday mornings post 2001.

When Performance Today added the Piano Puzzler I first rolled my eyes “that is sooo obvious!” I thought. But I was instantly hooked. The Robert is Robert Hannon who was my colleague and cohort-in -appreciation at the time. I was often in my car when the Piano Puzzler aired on KUAC. I listened, hoped to guess, was often stumped, and sometimes got half. I was always thrilled to figure it out. One of the things I liked about it was just how nice Bruce sounded. Easy and of course PT host Fred Childs also seems like a really nice guy. I remember the classical music hosts of my younger days. They were all so serious – there was so much pomp to classical music shows. But the music was always great and now, when I look for classical musicians for FCA I look for artists that embody that feeling of “I like them.” So why not ask the master? And guess what? He said “sure, can I bring my friends?” says us: “Why not?”

This wasn’t my idea – or even our artist selection committee’s – although Leone probably proposed it first. We heard it from you. Those surveys? When you fill them in we read them and you asked for Bruce Adolphe.

You asked. We listened.

It’s as simple as this.

Like each new generation, our season is informed by the successes of the ones that come before. In this relationship, we are like your eager to please puppies: Attentive to what you tell us on our surveys and with your actions. Our evening with...
