On Friday February 12, Fairbanks will get a preview of the Street Beat concert and have the opportunity to support the UAF at the same time. The rhythm of the street will be heard at Dancing with the Cars, a gala celebration of UAF and Fairbanks community to be held from 7 – 11 p.m. at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, 212 Wedgewood Drive, Fairbanks.

Have you ever watched a street performer playing great percussive beats on an instrument improvised from something you’d never considered as having musical potential?
The performers of Street Beat, a high-energy urban rhythm and dance group, do this in each of their performances, taking ordinary water bottles, buckets, trash cans, pots and pans, and making them into their own uniquely sonorous orchestra. The company’s dancers respond to the beat with hip-hop moves, astonishing break dance acrobatics, and the raw energy of the city.
In 2008, Baka Beyond offered a drumming and dancing workshop to the public on November 1 at the Artisan's Courtyard. Sixteen people spent the morning learning the percussive rhythms and exciting dance moves of the Baka people of Cameroon. FCA offers workshops whenever the artists have enough time on the ground in Fairbanks, and we love to see what results from these opportunities.

One of the more important, lesser known aspects of the Fairbanks Concert Association's annual season are the efforts to bring the talent to the audiences, wherever they are. A good example is the trip to Delta Junction by the performing group Baka Beyond. It's a win-win experience as the artists willing to make the extra effort get to see even more of interior Alaska.

FCA Executive Director Anne Biberman and board member Scott McCrea recently traveled to New York city to attent the APAP convention. The main purpose was to scout out talent for the 2010/11 season, of which there was plenty. But part of the fun was giving McCrea his first taste of the Big Apple.
